The General Ports Authority was established in the year 1396 AH to establish a specialized work system that constructs and manages Saudi ports with high efficiency. Within a few years, it was able to transform Saudi ports into an important economic tributary. Saudi ports, with their diverse specializations, have played an exceptional role in developing regional and international maritime trade and passenger transportation, especially for pilgrims and Umrah visitors to the Holy Sites. The year 1417 AH represented a turning point in the history of Saudi ports, in which the rational vision of our government and its endless support for national development projects was evident. It was decided to allocate the ports sector as the first sector whose services will be allocated in the Kingdom. This trend was accompanied by an exceptional role for the private sector. Huge sums have been invested to develop and modernize Saudi ports and manage and operate them according to modern methods. This historic step contributed to making Saudi ports independent economic entities that support the national economy effectively and integratedly, and move steadily towards greater goals and more comprehensive development. Exports now represent (70) percent of the total movement of goods in ports, while their percentage was less than (10) percent several years ago. The Saudi ports system, which is supervised by the General Ports Authority, consists of nine ports, six of which are commercial and three industrial, qualified with the best methods, systems and latest technologies necessary to receive all means of maritime transport, regardless of their stages of development, and to confront all challenges and variables with high efficiency. The Kingdom's ports have been distinguished at the international level by simulating development and growth in all economic sectors, which is crystallized in their reception of the largest share of exports and imports around the world.
